Benjamin Franklin was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on January 17, 1706. He was the son of a candle maker. Franklin had little formal education, but he was a voracious reader and taught himself a variety of subjects. At the age of 12, he was apprenticed to his brother, a printer. Franklin quickly learned the printing trade and began to write and publish his own essays and pamphlets.
